Carolyne Gathinji

Carolyne Gathinji is an Associate Partner at McKinsey & Company in Nairobi, where she leads the firm’s Financial Services work in East Africa. She is passionate about using innovation to advance financial access to underserved consumers and SMEs in Africa. Carolyne has served banks, telcos, donor agencies and government agencies on financial innovation and inclusion topics, including how payments could enable progression along these vectors. Her recent work examines use of digital wallets with a focus on emerging markets.

Carolyne started her career in Investment Banking at UBS Investment Bank in New York, in the Financial Institutions Group, working on M&A, equity and debt deals across FinTech, banking and asset management. Her time with McKinsey started in the Boston office. Carolyne holds a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degree from Harvard Business School (HBS), and double Bachelors’ (BSc.) degrees in Mathematics and Management Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
